Christening, Baptising
and Baby Naming Ceremonies
Christening Gifts and Clothes
Customs vary among churches but a christening or baptism
welcomes a baby or individual into their faith. A member of the
clergy performs the christening - baptising ceremony witnessed by
close family and friends. Godparents - Either members of the family
or close friends of the parents participate at the baptism and commit
to look after the moral and spiritual upbringing of the child. Most
babies wear finely embroidered white gowns. Others wear more modern
white garments.

Christening outfit traditions and trivia
Traditionally a christening robe or gown was a dress,
worn by both boys and girls, with long sleeves and a long skirt,
often with many layers of lace and petticoats. The expanse of the
skirt allowed for the quality of the fine cotton, linen, silk or
intricate embroidery to be shown off in a display of wealth and
status. The dress was almost always white to symbolise purity and
innocence and was usually accompanied by a bonnet and shawl. The
advent of the Pram made the dresses shorter and more focus was then
placed on an elaborate bonnet.
Many families preserve a christening robe and hand
it down through the generations as each member of the family is
christened.
An Irish custom is that a bride carries a Magic
Hanky on her wedding day which can be converted to a bonnet
for her first childs christening. The bonnet can then be converted
back to a hanky for the new bride when it is time for the firstborn
child to marry.
In later years it became fashionable for boys to wear
silk or satin sailor suits or rompers, complete with sailor hat.
Fashions for babies now generally keeps on trend with adult designs. |
